About Reiki

What is Reiki?

The word Reiki (Ray key) is derived from two Japanese words:  "rei" meaning Universal

Spirit and "ki" meaning life force energy. It can be translated as universal life giving energy.

Reiki was discovered and developed by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk and

business man, who traveled extensively in the pursuit of knowledge. In March, 1922,

after a twenty-one day retreat on Mount Kurama, a powerful spiritual light entered the

top of Dr. Usui’s head and he had a satori or enlightening experience.  He realized he had

been attuned to a great power.

This energy source was an ancient healing and guidance technique, teaching the way to

create balance with nature.  Dr Usui explained that his Reiki Ryoho is built upon the

spiritual power of the universe.

After practicing upon himself, family and friends, Dr. Usui started a healing society and

opened a clinic to give treatments. He developed levels or degrees and trained others in

this method.  He connected people to the Reiki energy through attunements - gentle

initiation rites - as we do today.  He wished for his Reiki Ryoho to be available to all.

Reiki was brought to the west by Mrs. Hawayo Takata in the late 1930s and the method

and techniques she taught were, by and large, those used by western practitioners.  In

recent years there has been more contact with Japanese Reiki masters and we have

learned more about the Japanese style of Reiki and original Usui Reiki Ryoho practices.

How can Reiki help us?

Reiki is a healing technique which has four distinct qualities.  The ability to perform Reiki

comes through an attunement or initiation which opens the channel and connects to the

energy.  The techniques are part of a lineage which is passed from teacher to student.

The Reiki practitioner does not guide the energy as this is done by a universal power.

Reiki can do no harm.

While Reiki is significant as a holistic healing method, it does not conflict with medical

procedures or medical treatments but helps to balance and energize your physical,

emotional, mental and spiritual systems.  It’s simple, easy, and safe, and once activated

through attunements lasts forever.

The Usui System of Natural Healing can also help us focus as we travel our spiritual path.

Dr Usui shared five principles meant to help us become more aware and thoughtful in our

daily lives. These principles are quoted by different groups and teachers with some word variations and interpretations.   You will find one version on the testimonials page.   These universal principles do not conflict with religious beliefs.  In fact, individuals in many

religious groups are drawn to Reiki, valuing its spirituality.

Reiki holds great promise for the future as it promotes healing, tolerance and compassion

- all qualities much needed by our planet and all people.  Why not find out about Reiki for yourself?
